How to manage your audio and subtitle streams in HDMV (EX) projects

When creating an HDMV project (using DoStudio EX) with a typical structure of first play, main menu, feature and bonus playlists, we recommend matching the amount of subtitle and audio streams on every playlist (except for the first play, which will play only once at the beginning).

On playlists that normally have only one audio stream it is possible to add the needed amount of tracks and use the same audio stream multiple times as well as using  empty subtitle files, which are provided in the sample project “Resume23”.

One advantage of having the same stream configuration on each playlist is that the BD players will maintain the selected audio/subtitle configuration no matter which playlist is selected.

Another advantage is that in the main menu when setting up the audio/subtitle configuration for the feature using the HDMV menu it is sufficient to use the SetStream command and set the streams in the main menu as the configuration will be maintained when loading the feature.  The subtitle tracks linked to an empty subtitle .dost file will not display any subtitles when activated inside the main menu.

The sample project “Resume23” shows this type of authoring. Notice how all the segments except for the first play segment have the same amount of audio and subtitle streams.
